I have been dying to do something with a squirrel for my DH’s bento lunch. You see, he’s a TOTAL SQUIRREL FANATIC. Yep, so much so that the ladies in the park whisper behind his back, ‘That’s the squirrelman.”

This is also my first real effort at something other than a simple flower in his bento. It’s very rough and crude but I intend to get better. This is “supposed” to be one of those dark purple-leafed trees with an orange squirrel in it. The trunk is cut from hickory tofu, the grass and leaves are lettuce. The squirrel is cut with a paring knife from a slice of carrot. If only I could find a squirrel cutter or something. Not a lot of squirrel tools out there. I had to tell hubby there was a squirrel in there and he thought the tree trunk was the squirrel at first. I guess I have to practice a whole lot more. (Click here to see my post on what the really fabulous bento artists are doing at e-obento.)

Close up of the squirrel so you can see how dull my knife was:

  • Extra slices of hickory flavored tofu
  • Mini salad with sesame dressing

  • Pacal Votan exotic vegan chocolate truffle from Cru Cacao

About the Cru Cacao truffle.

The truffle is in the gold square in the photo of my bento. It’s hard to see because it is an incredibly dark chocolate truffle. If you’re a huge fan of super dark, rich and dense chocolate, you’ll like the truffles from Cru Cacao. They have a really intense and true chocolate flavor without a lot of sweet. Cru Cacao makes a variety of gourmet flavors including one with 23 karat gold leaf on top. Pretty amazing.

Oh, and they’re available at the Green Grocer in Chicago.
